Rev. John Gould

Church Secretary

Christmas is coming, ever wonder who celebrates and why?

The story is more than 2000 years old and has stood the test of time. It starts with a scared frightened teenager who finds out she is not only pregnant, but with a child who is to do things that she can’t even imagine, at a time in history when unmarried girls could very well be stoned to death.  So she ends up married to Joseph and on their way to Bethlehem on a donkey, no taxis or luxury travel for them, long before the internet and expedia.com so when they arrive they have no reservations.  So they end up the only place that Joseph was able to finagle, a stable with the animals. How many of us would settle for the horse barn at the edge of Toronto instead of the Holiday Inn?

Many women can relate to waiting for a child to be born, you are scared for what is to happen, but at the same time want to have it over and done, but I can’t imagine that Mary was very thrilled to be delivery away from home, without her mother and in stable with her new husband who wasn’t likely well versed in delivery a baby. The events that follow were equally as amazing, the star, the shepherds, and the Magi.

And who is he and why is he special? That’s the part that needs to be told and retold. He is the Son of God, in human form. He had to be born not just appear, otherwise how would the story be believable at all. He needed to be one of them, one of us.  God had great plans for him and his ministry. He gave us simple rule for living together, love your neighbour as yourself, do unto others as you would have done unto you, however you want to say it.

The stories of Jesus ministry have lived on for years being told over and over and stood the test of time. His parables work as well today as they did then.

So what has he done for you lately? He listens to your prayers every day, helps you with your problems just by you giving them to him. His simple rules for living with others give us direction although sometimes the “simple” rules are not so simple to follow.

So when we tell the story to people who don’t know it, or don’t know the whole story, how do we tell it? Do we use language the average person understands? Do we put the emphases on the arrival or the life and ministry? Do we tell about how he died and rose? And why he did.

This year we would like to invite everyone to come and hear the story again or for the first time.

We’ve started out Countdown and we’re waiting for you to join us. We have events planned and we’d like to share them with YOU!

This is the post card we are delivering to as many homes in our area as possible.

This is the post card we are delivering to as many homes in our area as possible.

There are so many different ideas about Chrismas out there and we want you to know as much about the story as possible.  So here is a video to start your thought process.

Read from Matthew the Story of Jesus birth

The Birth of Jesus the Messiah

18 This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph, her fiancé, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly.  20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”  22 All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: 23 “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” 24 When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. 25 But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.

Luke 2

The Birth of Jesus

1 At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. 2 (This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. 4 And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. 5 He took with him Mary, his fiancée, who was now obviously pregnant.  6 And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. 7 She gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.

The Shepherds and Angels

8 That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. 9 Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, 10 but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. 11 The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! 12 And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.”  13 Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”  15 When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”  16 They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. 17 After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. 18 All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished, 19 but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. 20 The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.

We invite you to join us at 9:00 for our Christmas Eve service. We have a special drama to share with carols to sing. It is our hope that you will use this opportunity to remember why we are celebrating at this time of the year. Bring our family, your neighbours, come alone, but please come and celebrate with us.

The United Church of Canada has made it possible to make donations on line to help the victims of the earthquake.

http://www.united-church.ca/communications/news/response/100113

Taken from the site:

  • Donate: You may make a donation in either of two ways:
    • Designate a gift for the “Haiti Appeal.” As part of the United Church’s Emergency Response Fund, 85 percent of your donation will go directly to emergency response in Haiti. Fifteen percent will be used to support emergencies that do not receive intense media cover and response. No administration fees will be deducted from your donation. Regular donations to the Mission and Service Fund enable the United Church to absorb staffing and administration costs of emergency response work.

Cheques and online donations should be made payable to The United Church of Canada and marked “Haiti Appeal.” The funds will be treated as “designated gifts.” Please note: Designated gifts cannot be counted as M&S Fund credits. However, they are eligible for tax receipts. Congregational treasurers may receive and receipt individual cheques and then forward one congregational cheque to the United Church.
